Skillastics® and SHAPE America are partnering for the second annual Skillastics Physical Activity Grant Program. Skillastics will award five grants to elementary, middle and/or secondary health and physical educators totaling $10,000. Each grant will provide up to $1,000 of Skillastics products and up to $1,000 for the educator to attend the 2019 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Tampa on April 9-13. Oakland Elementary Gives Students Healthy Start to School

Students at one Illinois grade school are getting a healthy start to the day. School starts about 20 minutes early each day for one grade to walk and jog in the school gym to get their blood pumping and help them focus for the day. The program was physical education teacher Bethany Romer's idea. She started it last year with third-graders as a pilot project. This year it was expanded to grades 2-5. READ MORE

State Lands $9 Million Grant to Improve Mental Health Services for Students

Louisiana is getting $9 million to help educators detect and address mental health problems among public school students, especially in alternative schools. The funding will allow Louisiana to set up a comprehensive mental health support program for schools and will include training for teachers to better recognize students with mental health issues and connect those students and their families with services. A series of recent University of Michigan studies found that two-minute bursts of in-class exercise breaks increased the amount of daily exercise for elementary children without hurting math performance.
