Recently the State Department of Education in Alabama issued guidance that advised teachers to use standards-based physical education instruction in the largest classroom in the school — the gymnasium.

 

Unfortunately, this guidance was not popular among all the residents of Alabama. Detractors slammed the department for depriving children of having fun because to those critics, “What could possibly be wrong with teaching 'Duck, Duck, Goose' and dodgeball?”

The other night at the dinner table it was clear that my daughter was upset. When I asked what was bothering her she shared that she had been hurt during physical education (PE) class. As a result, she said she never wanted to go back. PE was her favorite class, though, so I pressed her for more details. That's when she told me that they had played dodgeball, and I instantly knew what had happened. So, parents, I think it's time we have a talk about dodgeball...

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) announced today that event registration is open for the next National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW), to be held on January 22-27, 2019. NDAFW is an annual, week-long series of educational events that link teens with scientific experts to SHATTER THE MYTHS about substance use and addiction. NIDA and NIAAA are both part of the National Institutes of Health.

There is no doubt that music goes well with physical activity, whether it’s in a gym or working in your yard. Research has shown that focusing on a song you love combats brain signals associated with fatigue, boredom or lack of motivation. Studies have also shown that heart rate and respiration increase when a person listens to music that has a faster beats–per-minute tempo than your normal heart rate.
