As principal at Langley Elementary in Washington, D.C., I had two objectives: to empower teachers who truly care about supporting the whole child and to inspire a school-wide culture shift. Langley Elementary has historically struggled with dropping student enrollment numbers, a rise in suspension rates, and an unimpressive student satisfaction rate. There was a disconnect between teachers, students and parents that was impeding on the learning process. My answer to this was to ingrain social-emotional learning (SEL) in every aspect of the curriculum.

High-impact hits may affect the brain development of children and teens after just one season of football, preliminary research suggests. The study compared functional MRI scans taken pre- and post-season. The researchers saw more gray matter volume in those who had high-impact hits — but no concussions — over the season. More gray matter indicates that the brain might not be working as well as it could be.

If you need more evidence, in November The Atlantic magazine and HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" have taken in-depth looks on how money is skewing who plays and who doesn't. Basically, as with racism, the larger issues of income inequality are showing themselves across the fields and courts where American children play.
