Distance Learning Resources for COVID-19

As many schools move to distance learning due to COVID-19, we are working with K-12 health and physical educators to compile resources that will help you provide high-quality, standards-based lessons in a virtual environment. Adapt, repurpose or use the resources as you see fit.

Health and physical educators can reduce sedentary time during school by integrating a whole-of-school approach. An example of this may be implementing the components of a comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP) and/or providing classroom teachers with supplemental materials on how to promote physical activity in the classroom.

The Daily Journal

As a Bay Area shelter-in-place goes into effect beginning today, many coaches, teachers and school administrators are having to deal with an ever-changing landscape when it comes to the health and well-being of their student-athletes: not only their minds, but their bodies as well. So with schools — and by extension, school athletics — shut down, everyone is trying to figure out the best way to continue to teach and coach.

Scope

COVID-19 is harming public health, clearly affecting those who have tested positive. But its reach is much more widespread. I've seen an uptick in stress, a drop of physical activity, and dip in social interactions. The fallout is likely to exceed the direct harms of COVID-19, but worsening health and well-being also makes us more susceptible to the novel coronavirus and its complications. It's a good time to take both a break from the news and a few deep, meditative breaths.

ABC News Radio

As the coronavirus has prompted the sudden cancellation of classes for 37 million (and counting) students across the nation, one Georgia school district has already launched its first foray into teleschooling, providing students with everything from band practice and physical education to algebra and English. Living rooms and home offices across Fulton County, Georgia, were transformed into virtual classrooms on Monday for more than 93,000 students.

There’s nothing routine about the coronavirus epidemic, but experts say keeping a regular learning schedule for kids and teens is a must. That’s why when Massachusetts mom Jessica McHale started keeping her kids home from school last Friday, she crafted a colorful “COVID-19 Daily Schedule” that includes blocks of time for “morning walk,” “creative time” and “academic time.”

No Child Left Behind. Every Student Student Succeeds. Race to the Top. Regardless of the names policy makers put behind national education initiatives over the last 20 years, the outcomes have been the same. Children are regularly left behind. Every student does not succeed (many actually lack a legit opportunity to do so). And when it comes to the educational equity race, the ever-elusive finish line makes it feel like we are not on a track, but on a treadmill. The coronavirus pandemic is revealing new layers of inequity that may end up setting us back even further.
