Researchers believe that students will experience greater success — both mentally and physically — if two separate content areas merge together, rather than operate individually. Researchers call this an interdisciplinary curriculum. In this study, researchers wanted to see if an interdisciplinary curriculum of math and physical education would have any effects on physical (in)activity levels and the learning of subtraction among first-grade students.

SHAPE America is requesting professional input from those who teach health education and health education specialists to help define terms that are relevant and necessary within our profession. We hope that you have a few moments to take the 2020 survey from the Joint Committee on Health Education Terminology appointed by the Coalition of the National Health Education Organizations (CNHEO). If you completed the survey already, please do not complete the survey again. However, if you started the survey previously and exited prior to completion, then please try again — the survey has been updated with the ability to save and complete it in multiple sittings.

Whether we’re planning and teaching virtually or managing projects, working from home for extended lengths of time can be challenging as work time blends into personal time. It’s too easy to slip into being on call 24/7 as we tackle emerging challenges and requests from learners anywhere and at any time. But setting boundaries that separate work time from personal time is only a first step.

We’ve seen a varied response from educational institutions to the lockdown. In general, only those with a solid educational practice, with students who have access to connectivity and devices, and with staff already trained in the use of online teaching have been able to maintain their activity with minimum disruption, while others  —  the vast majority  — have simply done the best they can under emergency conditions, hoping to weather the storm.

March 2020 will forever be known in the education community as the month when almost all the world’s schools shut their doors. The speed of these closures and the rapid move to distance learning has allowed little time for planning or reflection on both the potential risks to safeguard against and the potential opportunities to leverage.

Front Porch News

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, online lessons and homeschooling are the new normal in education. How does physical activity fit into this new mode of learning? Hildi Nicksic, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M, explains why physical activity is important for students during this time. Most of us are familiar with the physical benefits of activity and exercise, but it also helps with brain health and cognition.

At the end of March, our team at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, along with our colleagues at the Collaborative for Social Emotional and Academic Learning, known as CASEL, launched a survey to unpack the emotional lives of teachers during the COVID-19 crisis. In the span of just three days, over 5,000 U.S. teachers responded to the survey. We asked them to describe, in their own words, the three most frequent emotions they felt each day.
