Matt Dunkin, veteran physical education teacher in the Topeka Unified School District 501, wants every kid to play, and he’s sharing his knowledge of how to make sure that’s possible. Dunkin travels to schools throughout the district as an adaptive PE specialist, helping PE teachers make sure their classes are accessible for all students, as well as helping the students who qualify for adaptive PE to grow in their own abilities.

The Conversation

When I noticed my 12-year-old son was spending about seven hours a day doing his schoolwork online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I immediately became concerned. As a researcher who focuses on how to get kids to be more physically active, I knew my son and his classmates were spending too much time sedentary. Being physically active is good for everyone’s physical and mental health, including children of all ages and abilities.

Jared Sellers’ classroom sure has changed since the coronavirus moved everyone inside their own homes. The Auburn Unified School District adaptive physical education teacher is using a forgotten part of the house to teach his students. “I looked at my garage … and I knew that I could transform it into a space where I could still teach students,” Sellers said.

UTSA Today

When the COVID-19 pandemic sent everyone home, the struggle was real for physical education teachers, coaches and student-athletes. Seasons were canceled or postponed. Practices were canceled or dramatically modified. Both athletic coaches and PE educators suddenly had to adapt physical activities for the virtual environment while many student-athletes eagerly embraced new identities and causes.

Edutopia

During the pandemic, there have been many uses of the term well-being. When teachers ask students only “How are you feeling?” as a way to gauge well-being, opportunities are missed to teach students that well-being is a multidimensional concept that encompasses more than just happiness. Research shows that if youth explicitly learn about well-being, their concept of subjective well-being can increase because they become mindfully aware of its components.

Edutopia

These are dark times, but if there’s anything that seems like a glimmer of light at the moment, it’s the fact that so many teachers are reflecting on how to fight racism. Teachers shaken by recent events and wondering how to work for change in our society and schools can start with these lesson plans, videos, and other resources.
