Teacher of the Year Program

Educational Viewpoints

Research has informed us that schools that embrace the whole child establish a foundation for academic success, improved school attendance and a decline in disruptive behaviors among students. These gains are made possible with a specific focus on the unique role that quality skill-based health and physical education plays in a school setting. It is a very exciting time in health and physical education.

The Oregonian

Stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus pandemic have moved everything indoors, including pent-up energy. Who best to turn to for advice on keeping kids moving, inside and out, than an educator who is passionate about promoting lifelong fitness? We asked Julia Stevens, president of the Oregon Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) and a physical education, dance and health teacher at Richmond Elementary in Southeast Portland, for advice.

These days, good news can be hard to find. But a movement that’s taken off in school communities nationwide means that signs of hope are now right there, just outside the front door. In Jacksonville, Florida, Duval County Public School leaders put out a call for sidewalk art that could keep students engaged while spreading words of kindness through the district.

The Washington Post

We already know the bad news: Bored kids, harried parents, days when time slows to a standstill. Here’s the good news: Museums, libraries, arts organizations, private companies, celebrities and many others are stepping up and creating online content for kids or offering free access to existing resources. Many more online portals and entertaining apps have been with us all along but never seemed more relevant. To give parents a sense of what’s out there, we’ve compiled resources in 10 categories: education, travel, reading, mental wellness, music, art, physical activity, theater and dance, languages and entertainment.

Boston Globe

From the White House podium to harried homes, pressure is building to reopen the nation’s schools. But the next iteration of American education will look far different from the classrooms that students and teachers abruptly departed last month. Many overwhelmed school systems remain focused on running remote education that was set up on the fly. Others, though, are deep into planning for what they see coming: an in-between scenario in which schools are open but children are spread out in places where they are normally packed together.

Education Dive

While districts brace for a loss of academic learning and wider equity gaps in the fall, the global pandemic is emerging as an opportunity to build social-emotional skills. “We’re seeing a significant uptick in interest in social-emotional learning from districts,” said Melissa Schlinger, vice president of practice and programs at the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. She noted isolation and rapid changes are highlighting the importance of emotional management, relationship, and problem-solving skills that can help students cope.
