Research indicates that physical activity patterns in youth carry over into adulthood. Alarmingly, 81% of youth ages 11-17 fail to meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity guidelines. Additionally, girls participate in less physical activity when compared to boys. In this study, researchers investigated whether girls preferred to have single-gender, mixed-gender, or no preference physical education classes.

As a physical education teacher at Winston Campus Junior High in Palatine, IL, Emmie Galan used to lead spirited volleyball matches and handball games in the school gym. Now she’s hosting Instagram Live workout sessions for students from her living room. “My first thought was, I need to engage them in a way that will lead to maximum participation for all of my students, which is always sort of difficult, even when PE is not online,” Galan said.

How quickly can you turn on all the lights in your house? Can you turn them off faster? The light switch race is just one of a series of videos and fitness challenges Poquoson Middle School health and physical education teacher Zachary Baker has posted on his Facebook page since all Virginia schools closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. “I’m just trying to give people ideas of how to stay active — whether it’s at their home or a walk down the street — while practicing social distancing,” Baker said.

Sophomores Kylie Brown and Taryn Preston are quick to say they miss the high school spring sports season due to the COVID-19 pandemic — Kylie runs sprints and relays with the Kent City track team and Taryn plays softball and participates in track — but neither girl is missing practice. High on school administrators’ list of concerns during the school shutdown, said Athletic Director Jason Vogel, “is the health and safety of our student athletes.

Chicago Jewish Day School provides four hours and 15 minutes of daily live instruction, including yoga, art and music. Students even do messy baking projects over Zoom, with parents as sous chefs. It bears little resemblance to the more typical experience that Jacob Rios is having in Philadelphia, where he attends first grade at a public school, Spruance Elementary. A close look at these two very different first-grade classes in two of America’s largest cities shows how the coronavirus pandemic has done nothing to level the playing field of American education, and instead has widened the gaps that have always existed.

For school districts implementing e-learning plans, a key concern is ensuring equity and access to learning materials for all students. Some students may not have access to the devices needed to complete e-learning activities, while others may not be able to connect to the internet from home. There’s also the question of whether students have at-home support to guide them through technical difficulties, and whether the tools their district is using for remote learning meet their individual learning needs.

Normally driven by an early alarm clock and bells throughout the school day, the new fluidity of remote learning has left many teachers feeling unmoored, we’ve heard. “The school day never ends. Parents now feel like I’m on call 24/7,” summarized one teacher on Instagram, referencing a sense of timelessness that’s led to disorientation in the teacher community. “It’s weird not to have your normal routine,” shared middle school English language arts teacher Stormy Dodge in Kapolei, HI.
