In the age of technology, flipped learning is becoming an increasingly popular pedagogical method being used by physical educators, both pre-class and in class. The pre-class phase allows teachers the opportunity to assign homework that ties into the day’s lesson. In class, teachers can use digital technology such as videos to provide demonstrations and further instructions. This study provides pedagogical examples of two physical educators who used flipped learning.

News Around the Nation

University of North Carolina

Challenged by limited resources and growing rates of COVID-19, rural America is confronting the pandemic through innovative strategies. This webinar— on August 19 at 1 p.m. EDT — will highlight the engagement of state agencies and nonprofits as they mobilize their collective resources. This topic may be of interest to HPE professionals involved with CSPAP and school-based physical activity and wellness promotion.

With kids out of the classroom and spending a lot of time at the computer instead, there's new concern that childhood obesity could get worse. Many kids will be learning from home this fall and they may not be on a steady eating schedule or getting enough physical activity. It's a recipe for childhood obesity to become much worse.

Behind the Mask is an original new song and music video designed to increase the use of face masks as an effective means of stopping the spread of the coronavirus. With the number of coronavirus cases continuing to rise around the country and disproportionately affecting communities of color, the release of Behind the Mask could not be more timely.

This is typically one of the most exciting times of the year, with high school football getting close to kicking off the season. Unfortunately, COVID-19 sidelined football and a bunch of other sports. "It's a concern," says Caledonia clinical psychologist Dr. Nicole Beurkens, "because surveys throughout this pandemic have shown that student athletes in particular are showing rates of anxiety and depression that are steadily increasing and rates of physical activity that are decreasing."

NBC News

Prior to the pandemic, fewer than one in four children participated in the daily physical activity requirements recommended by federal and state authorities. School closures and disruptions due to COVID-19 will only increase the risk of physical inactivity among youth. Without school sports, intramurals, regular PE classes, or even recess, the isolated nature of online learning risks contributing to a sedentary existence for kids that’s at odds with good health. In the coming months, we don’t just have to keep kids learning. We have to keep them moving.
