The 74

Two new surveys of teachers and school administrators confirm some of the worst fears about the switch to distance learning since the pandemic struck: The vast majority of teachers could not teach all the material they were supposed to, teacher confidence plummeted in schools without supportive working conditions, and fewer than half of teachers in high schools, high-poverty schools and schools serving a majority of children of color were able to contact their students.

Coach & A.D.

Research shows that kids begin sports earlier and specialize in sports sooner than they did in the past. The trend toward earlier specialization may improve sports skills in the short-term, but it is not leading to better long-term athletic development. In fact, seven out of 10 kids drop out of sports by age 13 because it’s not fun anymore.

The pandemic has shone a spotlight on inequality in America: School closures and social isolation have affected all students, but particularly those living in poverty. Adding to the damage to their learning, a mental health crisis is emerging as many students have lost access to services that were offered by schools. New research provides insights about the scope of the problem — as well as potential solutions.

USA Today

Hiring someone to oversee equity in education is one of the many practices school districts around the country are implementing to be more proactive in battling systemic racism. In Indianapolis, for instance, school commissioners recently adopted a new racial equity policy. Milwaukee school board members are calling for a regional plan to desegregate schools and reduce inequities among in the region.

The Herald Bulletin

In a typical school year, a relatively finite number of students need socio-emotional support because of adverse childhood experience, such as parental divorce, death of a loved one, or the fallout of an inappropriate relationship with an adult. But as the 2020-21 school year nears, Lori DeSautels, assistant professor in Butler University’s College of Education, said it is a certainty that 100% of students returning to school buildings have suffered through an adverse childhood experience because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial upheaval.
