It's Time to Prioritize Health & Physical Education Flyer

Across the country, school districts are developing reopening plans for the upcoming school year. And, while these plans vary from district to district, there is one message we want all local leaders and administrators to hear loud and clear: Health and physical education is essential for students’ physical, mental and social-emotional health.

Share this flyer with administrators and local leaders to advocate for HPE in your school.

SHAPE America

One primary goal of physical education (PE) is to promote students’ lifelong physical activity. This goal implies that PE should not only improve students’ in-class physical activity (PA) behavior but also promote their PA behavior outside of the school. The impact on out-of-school PA is known as the “PE effect.” In this article from the June issue of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, researchers propose and test the tenability of a two-pathway model of the “PE Effect.”

The Conversation

The brain connections and neural pathways that are formed before the age of 5 set the foundations for how the brain will develop throughout life. This not only applies to the social, emotional and cognitive areas of development (or “domains”) but also the physical. There is strong support for physical activity in the early years, and researchers have reported that time spent in this critical developmental period focusing on physical development through physical activity and active play has many benefits.

Edutopia

In response to the upheaval of the pandemic, researchers and the leaders from 112 schools identified what is most important in education, regardless of delivery method, and decided that the three most fundamental emphases should be on well-being, engagement, and feedback. They imagined a pyramid in which well-being is the largest section, at the pyramid’s base; engagement is the middle layer; and feedback is at the pyramid’s peak.

A new international collaboration led by Japanese researchers suggests regular physical activity improves cognitive ability in kids, especially those who initially showed deficits in executive skills. The researchers re-analyzed data from previous experiments in which executive function was assessed in children before and after several months of daily intervention with physical activity. The activities included aerobic activities, ball games and playing tag.

Education Dive

With the new school year fast approaching, principals and superintendents have a lot on their plates. Many are still navigating the extent to which they'll reopen school buildings (if at all), weighing how to implement safety measures, planning how remote learning fits into the puzzle, ensuring robust professional development is in place, re-evaluating transportation routes, and so much more.

At our middle school in inner-city Oakland, we started incorporating mindfulness into our daily announcements and homeroom time. Research shows that taking moments to practice and discuss mindfulness helps students thrive emotionally and academically by increasing focus and memory and reducing stress and anxiety. Distance learning creates a different context for mindfulness practice. Some simple strategies can help integrate mindfulness practice in distance learning.
