As this article for the July/August issue of American Journal of Health Education was being written, the COVID-19 pandemic was spreading around the planet. Previously unknown or rarely referenced terms such as social isolation, social distancing, shelter in place, personal protection equipment (PPE) and ventilators are now part of everyday lexicon and jargon.

 

The purpose of this article is to expand our thinking on addressing chronic conditions using current strategies to contain the communicable COVID-19.

Parents across the country are determining whether their children should participate in organized sports due to the coronavirus — and research has shown a broader distinction of those fears in terms of income gap, according to a recent study co-investigated by a Louisiana Tech assistant professor. The study determined that only 53% of parents anticipate their child will return to sports activities at the same or a similar amount when current coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

In a recent principal training session, a participant raised his hand and asked: “How can I afford to invest in social-emotional learning when my students have fallen so far behind?” The real question is whether we can afford not to invest in practices that support students’ social, emotional and cognitive development right now. If we really care about student success, then we need to honor the biology of our brains — our interconnected centers of emotions, focus and learning.
