In this paper, the authors establish the connection between adults’ sedentary behaviors and their lack of motor competency. They recognize the importance of adults being able to perform multiple motor movements well as a potential indicator of physical activity levels with the opposite also being true.

According to a study published in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, children and young people reacted positively in PE lessons to the use of exergames, which deliver physical activity lessons via games or personalized activities. Changes included increases in physical activity levels, but also improved emotions, attitudes and motivations towards physical activity.

The pandemic has put an enormous amount of stress on families — and so will the return to in-person classes this year. How can parents and teachers help children bounce back from the trauma of the pandemic? Start by validating their experience and recognizing that this has been really hard. Physical activity is huge, especially in team sports where you have coaching, which is mentorship, and the camaraderie of the other athletes. Physical activity also helps reduce stress hormones and release healthy hormones.

Schools are back in session, and they're rushing to catch children up after as much as 18 months outside of classrooms. Districts are expected to spend billions of dollars on accelerated learning programs and extra instruction time. But the rush to close academic gaps poses a risk: worsening social-emotional gaps that also have formed. The answer? Recess.
