The purpose of this study was to understand students’ experiences with food health and how it impacts their day-to-day lives. The participants of the study were students in grades 6-10. They were placed in focus groups and asked to answer questions relating to food health education.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Schools are uniquely situated to help kids be more physically active. The Community Preventive Services Task Force recommends two classroom-based interventions to increase physical activity: physical activity breaks and physically active lessons. These evidence-based recommendations are based on published systematic reviews that were selected and rigorously evaluated by a team of specialists.

 

National Institutes of Health

Longitudinal survey data of more than 3,000 adolescents ages 11-14 recorded before and during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 found that supportive relationships with family and friends and healthy behaviors, like engaging in physical activity and better sleep, appeared to shield against the harmful effects of the pandemic on adolescents' mental health.

The pandemic has led to increased interest from districts in community schools, a model that uses public schools to connect families with community resources and care for the “whole child,” according to education organization leaders. While the model had already been gaining traction before COVID-19 struck, community schools were uniquely positioned during its onset to support families’ needs.
