News Around the Nation

The Conversation

As parents and schools seek to support students’ social and emotional needs – and teach them what they need to learn – some education leaders are missing one particularly effective opportunity. The physical activity and social connection that take place at recess help children’s brains work and develop properly by lowering their levels of stress, regulating their nervous system, and allowing them to be more engaged once back in the classroom.

National Healthy Schools Collaborative

The National Healthy Schools Collaborative (NHSC) is on a mission to coordinate and accelerate equitable funding, policy, and practices for health in education so that every school succeeds, every educator excels, and every child thrives. Educators are asked to take a brief survey to help transform K-12 policies and practices across all areas of health.

CDC Healthy Schools

Through the National Collaboration to Promote Health, Wellness, and Academic Success of School-Age Children, CDC Healthy Schools funded five national non-government organizations (NGOs) to complement and strengthen the work of state grantees. A toolkit of resources is now available which can be used to expand and enhance programs.

University of Michigan News

Peggy Ruckes, a retired Detroit school teacher, is the first to admit she’s got problems with her knees and hips from sitting too much. She’s working to change that by using an exercise platform first designed to get kids moving in the classroom that has transformed since the pandemic to reach communities across the state.
