Although these two health concepts have been often examined as a whole, few studies have explored the possibility of mixed profiles. Kids on Autism Spectrum Get Physical Activity, Nutrition Support Through Detroit Program

A Wayne State University (WSU) community-based program for kids on the autism spectrum is taking off. PLANE, short for Physical Literacy and Nutrition Education, offers adaptive strategies to get kids moving, as well as a nutrition curriculum that shares ways to introduce kids to healthier foods. [SHAPE America member] Leah Ketcheson, assistant professor and program coordinator of WSU's Health and Physical Education Teaching program, proposed the idea for PLANE through her 2016 doctoral thesis. High Intensity Interval Training Appears to Simulate Brain Growth in Older Adolescents

New research provides evidence that high intensity interval training improves metabolism in a brain structure responsible for memory formation and retention. The study, published in Psychophysiology, found increased metabolism in the left hippocampus following a six-month physical activity intervention for adolescents. “The primary focus of my research is the design, evaluation, and dissemination of school-based physical activity interventions,” said David Lubans, corresponding author of the study.
