The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activities and social contexts of children during their indoor free play time to see if adding equipment and a designated space for physical activity in the indoor classrooms would enhance movement. Social and emotional learning skills like teamwork and community can be integrated into PE classes in ways that are highly engaging for students. In my first year as athletic director and PE teacher at Burbank High School in California, the staff recognized a need for improvement in school culture and morale among teachers. Maryville College students delivered physical education lessons at Foothills Elementary School last semester, but both groups learned from the experience. The college students developed lessons based on SHAPE America’s National Standards for K-12 Physical Education and worked with Foothills special education teacher Amanda Waters, whose students have a range of physical, medical, emotional and behavioral disabilities, developmental delays, autism, speech and/or language impairments, Down Syndrome, attention deficits, and other conditions.

Creating a “just right” classroom environment where all students feel they belong is key to a successful school year. The first five days can set you and your students up for a joyful and successful year or semester. As with all new learning, you’ll need to review and reteach after the first couple of weekends, after a longer weekend, and always after a holiday break.
