SHAPE America

In this new blog post, guest author Julene Ensign writes: When I meet higher ed colleagues from other PETE programs, our conversations often turn to issues we are facing with our students. What I’ve learned is that even though our PETE programs may be different, our students are almost all struggling with the same issue — their professional transition from students to teachers. While no one-size-fits-all solutions exist, employing some common strategies may help increase the odds of success in your career as a health and physical educator.

SHAPE America

In this new blog post, guest author Sarah Totall writes: Are you losing your gym space for a class period, a day, a week or longer? Although teaching PE without a gym is not ideal, it is possible. My classes dealt with snow, rain, thunder, and bitter cold windy days.

News Around the Nation

Ohio Capital Journal

A new study shows Ohio parents want to see students receive support inside and outside of the classroom, and they trust teachers to know how to lead their children. In a study conducted over six months by the Children’s Defense Fund-Ohio in partnership with Baldwin Wallace University’s Community Research Institute, more than 1,000 K-12 parents were asked about everything from school nutrition to social-emotional learning, a concept named the “Whole Child Framework.”

CDC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) is excited to release a new webinar series that introduces CDC’s Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT) and its many uses for schools. The series can help you develop health education that is focused on the most relevant health outcomes for youth in your community. HECAT is aligned with the National Health Education Standards and is based on the Characteristics of Effective Health Education.

Edutopia

Since the return to in-person learning, teachers have struggled to deal with students who lack social skills and the ability to regulate their emotions. This is especially true in early childhood classrooms. A lack of exposure to peers during critical learning months and years has put many early childhood teachers in the situation of having to teach social and emotional skills before they can teach academics.

Texas A&M Today

Experts say students can be affected by trauma in several ways, such as experiencing or learning about events like the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic and the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde. Texas A&M Today spoke with two experts with backgrounds in educational psychology to better understand how trauma affects K-12 students: Jeffrey Liew and Idean Ettekal are professors in the Department of Educational Psychology in the School of Education & Human Development at Texas A&M University.
