News Around the Nation

The Hechinger Report
Amid long, structured school days filled with academic demands, recess serves as a critical outlet and break for kids, according to pediatricians and child development experts. But, on any given day, an untold number of children in elementary schools nationwide have all or part of their recess revoked for infractions such as failing to finish their work, talking out of turn or not following directions.

New York Daily News

Ask just about any young child what they like best about school and you get the same response: “PE and recess.” Drastically increasing physical activity in schools will save countless lives by reducing chronic disease, while also improving academic achievement and reducing racial disparities, all while saving money.

Edutopia

An occupational therapist offers a series of calming whole-body exercises for students to do as a class throughout the school day. The sequence takes only about 5 minutes, and students can do the exercises on a rug or mat right next to their desks. It’s best to do the sequence regularly and consistently ... mornings, after lunch or recess, before transitions, and after any high-stimulation activities.

The Seattle Times

When students step inside educational institutions, we cannot leave our outside lives behind. If schools expect students to care about learning, then they must show care for our well-being. We need to abandon the thinking that one’s personal life is autonomous from their academic one. Researchers have documented how poverty and classroom engagement are interconnected.
