News Around the Nation

SUNY Cortland News

Going to school and navigating to their preschool classrooms has new meaning for a select group of local children, thanks to a community service project that received a boost from SUNY Cortland’s Physical Education Department and student volunteers from two sport clubs. Cortland’s Racker facility, which specializes in services for people with disabilities, recently added a large collection of colorful floor and wall stickers known as sensory pathways. The artwork encourages youngsters at Racker’s inclusive childcare center to practice important fundamental motor skills such as jumping, hopping, skipping and many others — during their daily school routines.

Edutopia

In our annual ritual, we pored over hundreds of educational studies and pulled out the most impactful — from a new study on the sneaky power of sketchnotes to research that linked relationships and rigor. We found evidence that sheds new light on the misunderstood power of brain breaks, took a close look at research that finds a surprising — even counterintuitive — rationale for teachers to focus on relationships, and more.

The Dallas Morning News

“One, two.” Stomp, stomp. “Three, four.” Stomp, stomp. Stephanie Perez, 11, steps on and off an orange rectangular block to the count. A group of educators — some who teach visually-impaired students and others who are part of the district’s deaf and hard-of-hearing instructional team — cheer Stephanie on. While she practices the exercise, students with similar vision challenges swing softball bats, kick extra-large soccer balls, shoot basketballs or roll balls amongst themselves.

The Sport Journal

This study aimed to explore high school females’ perceptions of physical education through semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. The findings from the research are significant because there is a lack of qualitative studies that specifically focus on high school girls’ perspectives regarding physical education. The results indicate that students want variety and autonomy within physical education, and they need physical educators who understand the impact of social factors.
