News & Notes

Honoring the Legacy of Michael Metzler

In October 2022, we learned of the passing of Michael W. Metzler, Ph.D. (1952-2022). Dr. Metzler was a highly respected and influential scholar in the area of physical education. He was inducted as a Fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology and awarded the Luther Halsey Gulick Medal by SHAPE America. He also helped to found the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education. Some of from JOPERD and RQES are now available on the SHAPE America website. We are also working with the editorial staff of JOPERD to coordinate a forthcoming In Memoriam article. We all stand on the shoulders of giants and it is important to honor their legacy and contributions to our field. Virtual Research Lecture With Ang Chen

In November 2022, the Research Council collaborated with the Curriculum & Instruction SIG (chaired by Tori Shiver) to host a virtual event with Ang Chen, Ph.D., which had more than 200 registrants. In a lecture titled “Curriculum Research and Practice: What Are We Teaching? What Should We Teach?” Dr. Chen shared his insights about reconceptualizing physical education as an extension of kinesiology and health science rather than continuing as an extension of sports and athletics. The can be found on the web page.
