NEW RELEASE!

Reach Every Athlete Coaching Book Cover

SHAPE America's latest text, geared to undergraduate and graduate PETE students and in-service teachers, includes eight case studies of situations that expose racism, disparities, and other issues affecting Black students’ well-being, self-worth, and healthy experiences in PE, as well as reflective activities, resources, lesson considerations, and definitions.

News Around the Nation

American School Board Journal

When physical education researchers Tara Blackshear and Brian Culp decided to write a resource guide for PE practitioners about the need for equitable, antiracist curriculum and teaching practices in their field, they anticipated that their message would be met with skepticism by some. They knew that discussions around social justice, culturally responsive teaching, and the harm associated with anti-Blackness in physical education have been slow to gain traction.

Chalkbeat Philadelphia

Philadelphia High School for Girls’ physical education teacher Alicia Mannino knows that people think that her students get to play all day. Sure, her class is a lot of fun — but it’s also so much more. Mannino, who has taught for 13 years, believes physical education is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle — the birthplace of wellness and the best part of a student’s day. (A recent showed that most high school students have a positive view of health and PE classes.)

The Ithacan

While Ithaca College students work busy schedules, they may not have time to partake in physical activity. However, the physical activity, leisure and safety (PALS) program classes give students a chance to unwind and relax with various activities. PALS offers students a wide range of classes that teach them new skills and the opportunity to get hands-on with activities they may not have had the chance to ever partake in.

EdTech

With mental health in students continuing to decline, K–12 schools and educators are looking for the best ways to support those who are struggling without sacrificing learning. A renewed focus on social-emotional learning in K–12 classrooms is one way districts are trying to help students overcome the increased levels of stress and trauma many have experienced during the past two and a half years.
