Approaching the entrance to the gym at Thomas Fleming School in Essex Junction, you could hear that class was in session.
Sneakers pounded the wood floor, balls bounced, kids whooped.
Inside, a group of 18 fourth graders were playing a game called "Top Dog." Four portable tennis nets bisected the gym, creating four miniature courts, each with an adult instructor and a single student — the Top Dog — on one side and a line of young hopefuls on the other. ‘If You Teach a Man to Fish’: St. Charles Uses Grant Funding to Take Students Ice Fishing

It’s hard to believe a Midwest staple like ice fishing hasn’t been embedded in Minnesota’s education system for eons already, but St. Charles Elementary School has started reversing that ghastly oversight. With the help of a $5,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the school started easing students into the fishing scene. “It's more about adding lifelong activities for kids,” said PE teacher Scott Kobs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is looking to identify local education agencies (LEAs) for their Comprehensive Health Educator Core Knowledge and Skills (C.H.E.C.K.S) professional development study in order to develop and test a teacher professional development package designed for secondary health educators (grades 6-12). C.H.E.C.K.S identifies essential knowledge and skills for delivering health education and uses a blended-learning, skill-based model to help teachers build their competencies in effective instruction.
