Fall 2023

 

Greetings!

 

I hope you had a rejuvenating summer and are now ready for an exciting fall semester! Since the last newsletter, the has been working on planning events for the upcoming in Cleveland. We also had the pleasure of spotlighting a Research Fellow and highlighting research articles through our UnLock Research series.

 

Be sure to check out the upcoming deadlines below and apply if you’d like to become a Research Fellow, serve on the Research Council, or receive a research grant. For the fall 2023 semester, we will be planning exciting virtual events to connect with our research community.

 

Finally, I would like to personally thank the Research Council members and the SHAPE America staff for their support as I begin my chair position for the Research Council. Special thanks go to Paul Wright, past chair, for helping me in my transition from a member to chairing the council.

Dates & Deadlines

  • October 15: to serve on the . We will have at least two at-large positions and one graduate student member position open starting after the national convention in Cleveland.
  • October 31: Deadline to nominate an outstanding scholar to of SHAPE America. This program recognizes scholarly contributions to our field.
  • December 10: Deadline to submit an application for the . The grant is open to graduate students and early career professionals (within four years of graduation).

News & Notes

New Research Council Members

We’re thrilled to welcome the newest member of the Research Council ():

  • Dimetrius Brandon (Student-Elect, University of Tennessee, Knoxville)

Research Presentations for #SHAPECleveland

We are excited to have received 181 research abstracts and six research symposium proposals for review for the 2024 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo. Presenters should be informed of acceptance by October 31.

 

Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

The Research Council supports the following SIGs:

  • Measurement & Evaluation
  • Motor Behavior
  • CSPAP Research

To join a SIG, to your SHAPE America member account. Go into the My Profile section and select the Interest Areas tab to view/edit your Special Interest Groups.

 

SHAPE America Distinguished Lecture Series and Distinguished Service Award

The Research Council is currently reviewing nominations for the Daryl Siedentop Scholar Lecture, Raymond A. Weiss Lecture, and C. H. McCloy Research Lecture, as well as the Distinguished Service Award. Congratulations again to the .

Jennifer Walton-Fisette

Risto Marttinen, Ed.D.

Associate Professor
College of Education and Human Development

George Mason University

Discipline Area: Pedagogy

 

Dr. Marttinen’s research interests include sustainable and academically engaging after-school sports and physical activity programming. Specifically, he wants to focus on delivering free out-of-school PA opportunities for youth. Within this research, he also looks at the integration of other academic subjects into PE as well as the integration of technology into PE.
