“Prepare for battle at the plate, be mentally and physically sound to succeed.” Even without a history of military service, my father loved to incorporate military doctrine into my athletic training. “The only easy day was yesterday,” he would tell me during softball practices. These phrases, alongside plenty of other military jargon, were ones I heard frequently as he molded me into a sound softball athlete.

News Around the Nation

EdSource

Millions of young people across the nation have returned to school, yet students are still struggling to navigate the return to normal. Research shows us that educators and policymakers can bring back joy in schools by prioritizing sport and play to build a supportive learning environment. One where we all win. The role of sports and play extends far beyond physical fitness.

Green Matters

When kids ride the bike bus to school, they get physical activity, socialization, and also help the environment. One Portland man leads over 150 kids on a weekly bike bus. Every Wednesday during the school year, Portland physical education teacher Sam Balto leads over 100 kids to ride a “bike bus” to school.

Edutopia

In recent years, researchers have documented an increase in children’s mental health problems, and middle school students may be particularly vulnerable. Tweens must negotiate a more complex social and academic system, without the benefit of life experience, while in the throes of puberty, and as their brains continue to develop. Unsurprisingly, that can produce significant emotional discomfort.

Chestnut Hill Local

Liz Harris and Amy Carolla could’ve written a check. But that seemed “a bit passive,” Harris said. After all, in the poorest big city in the United States, physical fitness and eating nutritious food seemed like a luxury for many in Philadelphia’s most struggling neighborhoods. “Learning skills like meditation and getting kids outside was happening in private and suburban schools, but not in places like North Philadelphia where they needed it the most,” said Harris.
