    In her article, guest author Lynn Pantuosco-Hensch writes: “This time of year, it is increasingly important to incorporate physical activity into the school day. Adding more movement — through physical education, recess and active classrooms — is essential for beating the almost-winter blues.”

     

    John Cates, who taught physical education, recreation, health, and nutrition at both the high school and collegiate level, passed away on September 17, 2023. A longtime advocate of health and fitness, he served as a special advisor/clinician with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under five presidents.

    Experts say the U.S. is in need of more solutions to help tackle the loneliness problem that’s spreading across the country. Loneliness among young people, in particular, appears to be on the rise in the U.S. at the same time youth-sports participation seems to be ticking down. We sought out research and experts to determine whether these trends could be connected, and if they are, what communities can do about it to boost sports participation.

     

    Milken Institute School of Public Health

    Latinx kids who experienced depression, anxiety or other mental health issues in middle school had a greater chance of developing sleep problems, unhealthy weight gain, and sedentary behavior in high school, according to a new study. The research, led by a team at the George Washington University, suggests that unhealthy behaviors linked to mental health issues may start early in life and trigger obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other serious health problems.

    Physical education has always been a big part of Carli Ross’ life. She coached volleyball for over 15 years, currently teaches yoga classes, and is a lecturer for Chico State’s kinesiology program. Through a variety of rich experiences, Ross has developed a passion for adapted physical education specifically. In 2019, Ross came up with the idea for a study abroad, adapted physical education internship.

    When Tanner Bommersbach, M.D., and a team of Mayo Clinic researchers analyzed national records of pediatric emergency department visits, they provided essential data to describe the growing national crisis in pediatric mental health. Their study found that from 2011 to 2020, youth visits to emergency departments for mental health reasons doubled, while the proportion of visits for suicide-related symptoms increased fivefold. The team’s findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
