John Cates, who taught physical education, recreation, health, and nutrition at both the high school and collegiate level, passed away on September 17, 2023. Mental Health Issues in Latinx Middle Schoolers May Increase Risk of Sleep Problems, Obesity and Unhealthy Behaviors

Latinx kids who experienced depression, anxiety or other mental health issues in middle school had a greater chance of developing sleep problems, unhealthy weight gain, and sedentary behavior in high school, according to a new study. The research, led by a team at the George Washington University, suggests that unhealthy behaviors linked to mental health issues may start early in life and trigger obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other serious health problems. Physical education has always been a big part of Carli Ross’ life. She coached volleyball for over 15 years, currently teaches yoga classes, and is a lecturer for Chico State’s kinesiology program. Through a variety of rich experiences, Ross has developed a passion for adapted physical education specifically. A Decade of Data Describes Nationwide Youth Mental Health Crisis

When Tanner Bommersbach, M.D., and a team of Mayo Clinic researchers analyzed national records of pediatric emergency department visits, they provided essential data to describe the growing national crisis in pediatric mental health. Their study found that from 2011 to 2020, youth visits to emergency departments for mental health reasons doubled, while the proportion of visits for suicide-related symptoms increased fivefold. The team’s findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. READ MORE
