Disability simulations are activities used regularly in adapted physical education (APE) undergraduate courses to help raise awareness of the experiences of people with disabilities. Kids who get discouraged by idealized athletic bodies on social media may end up dropping out of sports, a small study suggests. In a preliminary study of 70 kids who played — or used to play — sports, researchers found that some had quit because they thought they didn't have the "right" body for the activity. And most got that idea from media images, including TikTok and Instagram posts.

Teaching middle schoolers bike riding skills as part of physical education classes may help improve their mental health. That’s according to a new study that looked at the effects of a 6-8 week cycling class taught in schools across the U.S. “We saw that there were mental health benefits across the entire population,” says Sean Wilson, a researcher at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and the study’s senior author.

Kids across California are getting a lot more time to play outside. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 291 into law last week, making a half-hour of recess mandatory for all elementary school students from kindergarten through eighth grade in the state. The new law will also prohibit educators from withholding recess as a form of punishment.

Specialization in a single sport at a young age can lead to lasting negative health outcomes for children, including injury and burnout, said expert panelists during a discussion hosted by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). “Ensuring that young athletes have the skills, strength training, and confidence to enjoy healthy levels of physical activity is critical,” said NATA President Kathy Dieringer, Ed.D.
