The politics around social and emotional learning are a distraction at a moment when we should all be focused on students’ recovery — and there’s a long way to go. Most parents, contrary to what some of the politics may have you believe, take the term SEL at face value. They support it. Pine Valley Elementary School students like to start their mornings with getting exercise, something that’s been shown to be effective at raising students’ grades. Caitlin Hunter says she became a physical education teacher because she realized her love for the sports she played growing up could become her job. After starting her career, she worked to begin the “Morning Milers” program at the Wilmington school.

Over the last three years, hundreds of bills seeking to strip protections from LGBTQ youth have rolled through statehouses. In the opening weeks of the 2023 legislative season alone, more than 400 pieces of legislation aimed at LGBTQ people — most of them targeting schools — were introduced throughout the country. But less visible is the dramatic effect the steady drumbeat of headlines has had on youth in places with even strong anti-discrimination laws.

Physical activity is vital for children’s health. But a recent study out of the University of Georgia shows there are disparities in access to places where kids can play. Lan Mu, professor at the University of Georgia’s Department of Geography, said for the study her team looked at national benchmarks from the National Recreation and Park Association. Mu said the team realized access to a park doesn’t solve the problem of disparity on its own so they developed an index to numerically measure “physical activity disparity.”
