This two-part, workshop-style webinar series combines instructional and collaborative components, with 90-minute sessions held at 7 p.m. ET on August 7 and August 14. Participants will gain strategies for integrating SEL competencies into their physical education programs, alongside physical activity and skill-development goals. For most Indigenous youth growing up in rural reservations, access to skating facilities is hard to come by. On the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, the loud chorus of spring birdsong is mixed with a new sound: the steady rumble of skateboard wheels on concrete. On a recent Sunday afternoon, a young girl sat on her skateboard and prepared to drop in on the halfpipe.

One of the co-benefits of such a yard, beyond cooling a school and even a neighborhood, is better human health. “Our immune system becomes more robust and stronger against infectious agents when we spend time digging in the dirt, when we have regular exposure to vitamin D from sunlight, and when we engage in physical activity on a regular basis,” said Marcella Raney, of the Office of Well-Being at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
