From DC to DMV: Capitals Hockey Program Reaches 1 Million Students and Makes Prince George’s County Home

The Washington Capitals and Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) announced its partnership to bring hockey to Prince George’s County students in 167 elementary, middle and charter schools … Schools will receive hockey equipment such as sticks, nets balls and pucks donated by the Capitals, a standardized SHAPE America-compliant curriculum, and the Capitals Youth Hockey Development staff visits for hockey-based assemblies. In the U.S., most people’s athletic careers end at high school graduation. Just 7% of athletes go on to play at the collegiate level, leaving many students with the challenge of staying fit in college without the structure and competitiveness of athletics. Rick Petosa, a professor in health and exercise science, said this differs from other countries where people continue playing sports into adulthood since athletics are less connected with schools.
