SHAPE America Research Council Newsletter

Winter 2025

 

Greetings!

 

I hope you all had great holidays with your family! Since the last newsletter, the Research Council has been working with the SHAPE America staff, program councils, and special interest groups (SIGs) to plan for the upcoming , to be held in Baltimore, April 1-5. We have facilitated reviews of abstracts, made selections for various scholar lecture awards, and worked with staff to organize the research components of the convention program.

 

In addition, the Research Council is currently reviewing applications for the Research Fellow program and the Thomas L. McKenzie Research Award. And at this time, I’d like to welcome Yubing Wang from Old Dominion University, who will officially become a professional member of the Research Council in April.

 

Hopefully, we will . For those who are attending the convention, please join us at the following Research Council events: McCloy Lecture and Distinguished Service Award, Weiss Lecture, Siedentop Lecture, Research Council Social, Coffee Talks, and the Graduate Student Forum.

 

If you are not planning to attend the convention, we hope this newsletter is a useful resource to you for staying connected and getting involved with the Research Council!

Dates & Deadlines

  • March 4: Submission deadline for . University students have the opportunity to share their ongoing research project in a poster presentation and receive feedback from experienced scholars at the 2025 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo.

News & Notes

Research Presentations at #SHAPEBaltimore

In early November, acceptance emails were sent to all #SHAPEBaltimore presenters. We are excited to announce that a total of 109 research abstracts (poster, oral and roundtable oral) and five research symposium proposals will be presented at the convention. .

 

Congratulations to Our Distinguished Lecturers and Award Winners
Those who have been selected by the Research Council include:

  • C.H. McCloy Research Lecture: Phillip Ward (The Ohio State University)
  • Raymond A. Weiss Lecture: Matthews Curtner-Smith (University of Alabama)
  • Daryl Siedentop Scholar Lecture: Hans Van Der Mars (Arizona State University)
  • Distinguished Service Award: Erin Centeio (University of Hawai‘i)

 

Those awarded by the SIGs we support include:

Motor Behavior SIG Lolas Halverson Lecture: Pamela Beach (Rochester Institute of Technology)

The SHAPE America Research Council is delighted to shine a spotlight on Scott McNamara, Ph.D., who was named a Research Fellow in 2023. Dr. McNamara is an assistant professor at the University of New Hampshire. As a researcher, Dr. McNamara focuses on improving adapted physical education (APE) services for disabled children and promoting awareness of these services to a variety of audiences.
