The essential role that physical activity (PA) plays in the overall health and well-being of youth is well-documented. Consequently, schools and physical education (PE) programs have been recognized as a favorable and feasible arena to promote youth PA on a wide scale.

 

This article from the August issue of JOPERD describes the benefits of unstructured PA and provides innovative strategies for implementing or embedding unstructured activities in a lesson without compromising the primary goal of PE.

Students are required to take physical education classes in order to graduate. However, because of the coronavirus pandemic, these classes look very different at Lord Botetourt High School and many other schools. Students notice one of the major changes before they step foot inside a gymnasium: Locker rooms are off-limits since there are no possibilities for everyone to social distance.

 

Northwest Herald

Remote learning is dramatically changing the way physical education classes are taught this fall at most suburban public schools. Teachers are using live and video instruction and prescribing activities students can perform safely at home using household materials. They also are emphasizing how staying active during the pandemic can help improve students' mental and social-emotional health.

When schools transitioned to remote learning in the spring, teachers worked quickly to adapt lesson plans and curriculums for virtual classes, while also trying to maintain community and connection. This fall, not only will many educators continue that same work, but they will have the added challenge of building community with students they’ve never met. To support educators who are trying to do this, we’ve compiled a list of strategies that can foster meaningful relationships and authentic connection in the virtual classroom.

Physical activity seems to help the brain work more efficiently and effectively. So, the brains of students in the Vacaville and Travis Unified School Districts must be in high gear, courtesy of a rigorous yet fun dose of physical education that students are receiving via distance learning. With no in-school classes, students are getting all their instruction online, including physical education, which research has shown can boost other forms of learning.

At a time when COVID-19 has turned many long-standing pedagogies upside down, physical education teachers across the country are going to spectacular lengths to keep kids moving and to stay relevant. One educator is streaming synchronous fitness classes from her basement. Another made house calls to do burpees with students across the Midwest. Going into the fall semester, these innovations have challenged the way educators think about the health and PE coursework; it will be less about exercise and more about wellness overall.
