American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Students who obtain the recommended hours of sleep enjoy improved attention, emotional regulation, quality of life and physical health. Conversely, those who do not get sufficient sleep are susceptible to attention, behavioral and learning challenges. As students return to school – whether in-person, online or in a hybrid format – now is the perfect time to establish healthy sleep routines to best equip students for success.

Physical education coaches are getting creative with virtual learning, while also getting kids moving with dance! Rachel Kaufman, PE coach at Fox Run Elementary is helping the kids to move and groove both on campus and at home. In addition to the dancing, the coaches give students “fit tips” every week to encourage healthy habits. They also start each day with a social emotional wellness check-in.

 

Texas A&M Today

Texas A&M University health education expert Hildi Nicksic says childhood obesity is an ongoing problem that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Nicksic, a clinical assistant professor in the College of Education & Human Development’s Department of Health and Kinesiology, maintaining physical activity for children during this time is important in keeping childhood obesity rates at bay.

Sports can be a big part of kids’ identities and can be a way to get exercise, manage anxiety, and connect with peers, said Dr. Celeste Quitiquit, a pediatrician and sports medicine physician at Seattle Children’s Hospital. So, she said, it’s important for parents and kids to work together to figure out ways to stay active and learn new skills in the absence of organized sports.
