Online M.S. in Physical Education

Free Access Article

JOPERD Cover

There has been much research done on the many different evidence-based instructional models in physical education. In this article from the October issue of JOPERD, researchers review the essential components of two popular instructional models, the Sport Education model and Cooperative Learning model, and the positive effects they have had on student motivation, behavior, attitude and social skill development.

They also discuss how professional development can improve teachers’ understanding and implementation of these models.

The November Mind & Body calendars are a great resource to send home with students or share through a link in a newsletter or email to parents. The calendars encourage students to stay physically active while working on aspects of mental wellness, too. Available for both elementary and secondary — in English and Spanish.

Children spend at least eight hours a day in school and are supposed to participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. However, there are many students who are not meeting this physical activity requirement. To combat this issue, a university offered an online course to classroom teachers to learn how to implement physical activity into the classroom setting.

News Around the Nation

River Journal

As students jumped and hopped on the field in physical education teachers Tiffany Flynn’s and Marisa Stracuzzi’s classes, they remained 12 feet apart in their own socially distant boxes. Painted by the grounds crew in a grid, the boxes allow the students to freely move in their space and concentrate on their movements and skills. “We know it has been a release for them to move around away from the screen, and we are excited that we can give students this type of experience,” Flynn said.

The Coronado Times

With distance learning well underway at Coronado High School, some may be wondering how students are staying active despite excessive amounts of screen time. The answer: physical education (PE). Although some are participating in sports and exercising on their own, not everyone maintains their fitness without the help of teachers and school guidance. Across all grade levels, PE classes are in session.

The Herald News

For many children, out of school also means out of the gym. Or off the playing fields. In other words, less exercise. Maybe none. With childhood obesity already a national problem, many fear it is being worsened by the restrictions related to COVID-19 fears. Some schools are in full remote mode, others in hybrid (semi-remote) mode. High school and middle school athletics have taken a hit.

The Washington Post

The coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot of things, including kids’ sports. Recently the Aspen Institute, an organization that studies sports as well as other important subjects, issued its State of Play 2020 report. One part of the report examined the effects of the pandemic on kids’ sports and how kids play. Researchers asked more than 1,000 parents of youth sports participants what their kids were doing during the pandemic.

Education Dive

Principals’ greatest COVID-19-related concerns right now center on overwhelmed teachers, tight budgets and equity in instruction, according to school leaders who spoke during a virtual Capitol Hill briefing Oct. 22 hosted by the American Federation of School Administrators, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Teachers are stretched thin because they are trying to accommodate all, but especially vulnerable, students in both online and in-person learning formats.
