Alliance for a Healthier Generation

Physical education does not happen without support from parents, caregivers and educational leaders. Parents and caregivers can influence school and district leaders by using a new guide from Alliance for a Healthier Generation to ensure that physical education is provided to all students. To start conversations with the right people, use the action-oriented discussion points provided in the guide.

Elementary school teacher Kelby Krefting knows his messages about health and fitness have gotten through when he hears parents say they learned something about muscles from their children who are in his class. Krefting, who teaches physical education to kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Ben Franklin Elementary School, uses a 6-foot laminated likeness of a bear, taped to the gym wall, to teach students about muscles in the human body.

For many children, out of school also means out of the gym. Or off the playing fields. In other words, less exercise. Maybe none. With childhood obesity already a national problem, many fear it is being worsened by the restrictions related to COVID-19 fears. Some schools are in full remote mode, others in hybrid (semi-remote) mode. High school and middle school athletics have taken a hit.

The Spokesman-Review

From leaf pickup to yard games, kids exert tons of energy at Darius Howard’s home. As a MUV Fitness district manager in Spokane Valley, Howard knows such activity will help his daughter, nieces and nephew gain lifelong habits for health. It’s a boost for their growth and mood, he said. “The biggest thing right now is just understanding what physical activity does for kids,” said Howard, who studied exercise science.

Imagine trying to work out in a crowded living room, with no exercise equipment besides rolled-up socks and soup cans. For many students in California, that’s what physical education class looks like these days. Since campuses closed in March, PE teachers are scrambling for creative ways to keep students physically active — with no gymnasiums, sports fields or playgrounds — at a time when experts say students’ physical and mental health is paramount.
