Active Start Physical Activity Guidelines Cover

 

SHAPE America recently published the revised edition of Active Start: A Statement of Physical Activity Guidelines for Children From Birth to Age 5. The 2020 guidelines answer questions about kinds of physical activity, activity environment, and the people responsible for facilitating physical activity for children from birth to age 5.

 

This edition includes an expanded list of activities to implement with each age category: infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The e-book is free for SHAPE America members and $15 for non-members.

The M.A.Ed. in Physical Education Master Teacher is an online graduate program designed to help K-12 physical education teachers enhance their instructional effectiveness. Students can choose from emphases in pedagogy or special populations to help enhance their physical fitness classroom.

Integrating whole-school programs can be a daunting task, however, in this article from the September issue of JOPERD, the authors share tips from physical activity leaders at three schools who found that combining resources is a way to manage this task. This article briefly describes the CSPAP model and Healthy Schools Program and presents suggestions for the successful integration of school-wide physical activity.

In youth, cross-sectional studies reported age differences in balance performance that were in favor of adolescents. Thus, trainability of balance performance might be different in children compared to adolescents. The purpose of this study from the September issue of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (RQES) was therefore to compare the effects of balance training on balance performance between children and adolescents.

The COVID-19 crisis has affected young people of all ages, with many experiencing a level of trauma that can’t be ignored. As we enter a new school year, it’s vital that we consider students’ physical, mental, and social-emotional health above all else. Amid these changes and challenges, health and physical education teachers will be more important than ever.

Recess is an important part of the day for students even when school is happening remotely. And, being active is important for adults, too. So, while so many people are learning and working from home, add family recess to the schedule. “It’s just a great way to bring the family together,” said Dr. Cicely White, chief of pediatrics for Kaiser Permanente in Spokane.

College students are under a lot of stress, even more so lately due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on certain personality types, especially neurotic personalities, college health courses could help students develop a more positive stress mindset, according to research from faculty at Binghamton University, State University of New York.

 

PCSFN Science Board

The President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Science Board recently released its PCSFN Science Board Report on Youth Sports, which provides a deeper scientific understanding of why youth sports matter, as well as Benefits of Youth Sports. The Science Board is chaired by SHAPE America member Brad Cardinal and also includes SHAPE America members Erin Centeio, Karin Allor Pfeiffer, Alan Smith, and John Spengler.

 

Education Dive

In an attempt to keep students physically active during the pandemic, schools are replacing traditional physical education contact exercises with programming that emphasizes individual skill and strength progress rather than team achievements. State guidance and national association recommendations say the modifications are necessary to fit with social distancing practices or for virtual learning formats, even as physical exercise for students is as important or even more so during the pandemic.
