Online M.S. in Physical Education

Free Access Article

American Journal of Health Education Cover

The American Journal of Health Education (AJHE) has been published for more than 50 years. Over time, the mission and goal of AJHE have evolved from a publication focused primarily on school health issues in the United States to an international journal focused on chronic disease, and related lifestyle factors, for health education and health promotion researchers and practitioners, Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES®), and Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES®).

This feature article in the January-February issue discusses how the Responsibilities and Competencies for Health Education Specialists articulate with the mission of AJHE.

Because physical education is often underfunded, there is a noticeable difference in the quality of PE in low socio-economic status (SES) schools versus high SES schools. The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of SES factors on a constructivist physical education curriculum in an attempt to decrease the learning gap between low and high SES schools.

News Around the Nation

NPR

For much of history, human beings needed to be physically active every day in order to hunt or gather food — or to avoid becoming food themselves. It was an active lifestyle, but one thing it didn't include was any kind of formal exercise. Daniel Lieberman, a professor in the department of human evolutionary biology at Harvard, says that the notion of "getting exercise" — movement just for movement's sake — is a relatively new phenomenon in human history.

Newsweek

Connecting subjects students enjoy to athletics and physical fitness can help encourage them to pursue cross-disciplinary studies and cultivate self-motivated learning. In popular culture, there has long been a disconnect between intellect and athletics. But the stereotypes we all grew up with couldn't be further from the truth, and the narrative is changing. In reality, STEM — the study of science, technology, engineering and math — and sport go hand in hand.

EurekAlert

A recent study from Oregon State University has found that to best help kids with autism maintain healthy rates of physical activity, interventions should be targeted during the ages of 9 to 13, as that's when kids show the biggest drop in active time. The study is one of the first to look at this issue on a longitudinal scale.

ABC Denver

While educators have been faced with the challenge of teaching kids during a pandemic, coaches and athletic directors are dealing with another hurdle: How can sports safely carry on? We talked with Dr. Aaron Provance, medical director of the sports medicine center at Children's Hospital Colorado, about the challenges of high school and youth sports during COVID-19 and some of the issues that doctors and coaches are dealing with.

K-12 Dive

With dire statistics about how COVID-19 is already impacting the mental well-being of students and school staff, as well as the lingering duration of the public health crisis, administrators and school psychologists are assessing their approaches and planning for more supports where needed. They’re also finding confidence in their growing capacity to respond to the trauma their communities are experiencing.
