This article from the January issue of JOPERD overviews the practice of dehumanization and the implications for learning — and introduces proactive strategies to promote the success of all students.

A study at the Washington University in St. Louis suggests that if school closures continue at their current rate through the end of 2021, then the U.S. childhood obesity rate could rise by more than 2%. Students are sitting in front of webcams all day instead of moving around the classroom, and studies from Italy and Ireland suggest that they’re eating more junk food, as well. Many students also live in small apartments, crowded living spaces, or unsafe neighborhoods not conducive to physical activity. To combat these factors, [physical education] teachers at U.S. schools nationwide are adapting their curricula to help remote learners stay active.

The Compton Unified School District (CUSD) in California is located near Los Angeles and serves nearly 26,000 students. CUSD wanted to strengthen efforts to recruit, retain and promote male African American, Latino and Asian teachers who serve as effective and positive role models. The Compton Male Teachers of Color Network is helping its district strengthen professional problem-solving skills and empower educators.

U.S. News & World Report

As the amount of time young teenage girls spend glued to Instagram, TikTok and other social media sites goes up, so does their long-term risk for suicide, a new study warns. The findings, published recently in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, stem from a decade spent tracking social media habits and suicide risk among 500 teenage boys and girls, the longest such effort to date.

The Washington Post

The coronavirus pandemic and the resulting widespread shift to remote learning have brought major changes to physical education. Rolled up socks and laundry baskets have replaced balls and nets. “We’re disguising fitness,” said Brett Fuller, president of SHAPE America and a curriculum specialist for health and physical education in Milwaukee Public Schools. Because most kids don’t have a whole lot of gym gear in their homes, SHAPE America’s reopening guidance recommends that teachers ask students what they have on hand and provide a checklist of common household items that could be repurposed as sports equipment.
