African American athletes have experienced barriers and biases and subsequently different motivational factors that influence their overall participation in sports. Thus, it becomes important to understand potential differences in an athlete’s involvement in athletics and implement changes to help promote a positive climate, especially since a majority of professional coaches are Caucasian.

 

In this article from the March/April issue of Strategies, the authors review research highlighting motivational differences between African American and Caucasian athletes — and translate those differences to coaching practices.

The first webinar will be held on Wednesday, March 17 at 3 p.m. ET and will be available on demand after that time.

If your teenagers have been struggling to cope during the coronavirus pandemic, a new survey suggests they are far from alone. Researchers found that 46% of 977 parents of teens said their child has shown signs of a new or worsening mental health condition since the start of the pandemic. More parents of teen girls than parents of teen boys reported an increase in anxiety/worry, according to the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health at Michigan Medicine.

Just as children need to return to physical activity gradually to avoid overuse injuries after being inactive due to the pandemic, they also need a gradual return to learning, according to experts at a virtual American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) town hall meeting. AAP Chief Population Health Officer Anne R. Edwards, M.D., FAAP, moderated the town hall, which explored how pediatricians can help communities address the challenges of returning to school and physical activities.

When teens in need call the YouthLine, a peer-to-peer crisis/help line, someone like 19-year-old Emma Cooper answers. They could be calling about a number of things — from family or relationship issues, to mental health concerns, to contemplating suicide — but when they reach out to YouthLine, there’s someone they can relate to on the other end. “There’s so many specifics about growing up, with everything that’s going on,” Cooper said.

One of the key questions faced by school board members, city councils, state legislators, and governors at the start of the pandemic last March was what to do about schools. Unfortunately, school closures and the postponement of reopening have resulted in loss of structured physical activity opportunities for children and adolescents. During the pandemic, kids have been less active and, thus, are at risk of becoming more overweight.
