What the New CDC Guidance for Schools Means for Children

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance last week on the importance of having all schools opened for in-person, full-time instruction in the fall. To safely keep schools open, the CDC recommended what it calls "a layered mitigation strategy." This is a systematic strategy involving multiple interventions to reduce risk, such as including the use of indoor masks for unvaccinated students and teachers. READ MORE

School-Based Mindfulness Program Gives Big Boost to Young Kids' Sleep

Children tend to sleep less as they approach early adolescence, perhaps because of the pressures of homework and the presence of social media. Now, new research suggests that loss of precious slumber is not inevitable. The researchers found that a school-based program in mindfulness training — which involves being present in the moment, deep breathing and yoga movements — helped at-risk children not only curb that loss in sleep, but to gain more rest than they had before.
